Seek Peace

Colossians 3:15 says:
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”
Life can be chaotic. I know that’s certainly been true for me over the past couple of months. There always seems to be something happening. Whether it’s major life changes, difficult decisions, the loss of loved ones, work demands, or the ever-changing world around us, it can feel like we’re caught on an unending drama train.
When I came across this verse, it illuminated something I’d been missing: seeking peace.
The word that stands out to me here is “rule.” “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…” When something rules in our lives, it shapes us, guides us, and leads us in a certain direction. There are so many things that can rule our hearts at different times—money, power, the desire for approval, love for others, or even our status. These things pull us toward choices we may either celebrate or regret.
But what happens when we let peace rule our hearts? We begin to seek it out intentionally. We become more patient in our decision-making. We’re more discerning about the people or relationships that steal our peace. That doesn’t mean we avoid all stress or uncomfortable conversations. After all, those moments often help us grow and stretch our faith. But stress or conflict should never be what rules our lives.
And the peace we’re called to isn’t just a fleeting sense of calm or a temporary break from stress. The peace of Christ is a steady, abiding confidence that comes from knowing who He is and what He’s done for us. It’s the very peace Jesus promised in John 14:27, “My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.”
Paul ends this verse with a simple but powerful reminder: “And be thankful.” Gratitude keeps our hearts soft and our eyes fixed on God’s goodness, even in the middle of life’s chaos. Thankfulness fuels peace. When we choose to give thanks, especially in hard seasons, we invite Christ’s peace to take deeper root in our hearts.
Reflect: What has been “ruling” in your heart lately?
Take a moment to name the things (whether stress, fear, ambition, or something else) that have been guiding your thoughts, decisions, or emotions. How might inviting Christ’s peace to rule change your perspective today?
Respond: How can you pursue peace intentionally this week?
Consider one practical step you can take (whether it’s slowing down a decision, spending time in prayer, setting a boundary, or choosing gratitude) to let Christ’s peace lead you.
