Come As You Are | Meeting God in the Chaos

Has life ever felt so chaotic that you weren’t sure the chaos would ever come to an end? Much of my life has been spent trying to “pretty-up” and “doctor” myself, my thoughts, and my feelings before coming to God to talk with Him. And honestly, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to solve my problems on my own, only to realize that I could have just gone to God in the first place so that He could help me.

As I've been reading through Habakkuk, one thought keeps standing out to me: We can always come to God with whatever is going on in our lives. This book gives us such a powerful example of what it looks like to come before the Lord, not just with one issue, but with many, and how God always gives us the answers that we truly need.

In the first chapter, we see the prophet Habakuk come before God asking for help in a  time of violence and and destruction. He comes and asks, “Where are you God? I need you.” And the Lord replies to him, “Look around at the nations; look and be amazed! For I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn’t believe even if someone told you about it. (1:5)”

I don’t know about you, but this verse encourages me tremendously, because I know that God is always moving, working, and speaking, even if it’s in ways that I cannot comprehend.

Then, moving into the next chapter, we see Habakuk come back again to God and bring yet another complaint, one to which the Lord replies to again. He says to Habakuk, “Write My answer plainly… (2:2)” and this just confirms to us that everything that God says is true and that He will fulfill what He says, so much so that He commanded the prophet to write it down on stone tablets where they could be read, unchanged forever. God never says something that isn’t true, that isn’t righteous, and that isn’t fulfilled. He never goes back on His promises, and He always keeps His word.

After these back and forth conversations with God, Habakkuk sings a song of prayer that begins like this, “I have heard all about you, Lord. I am filled with awe by your amazing works. In this time of our deep need, help us again as you did in years gone by. (3:2)” Even in our times of trouble and our times of questioning, we can know that God will always come to our rescue and that He will always help us in our times of deep need. We can stand in awe of Him today and believe that God will always come through and will always do what He says He will do. Be encouraged today! God sees you. Come to Him with your worries, pain, questions, and grief. He will help you, He will carry you, and He will always come through.

Prayer and Activation: Pull out something to write with and some paper, or even pull up the notes app in your phone, and then say a prayer like this: “Lord for the next few minutes, I dedicate my time to You. I have questions, and I need Your help in my life. Will You please speak to me by the power of Your Holy Spirit?”

Once you’ve prayed, write down a list of what’s worrying you or questions that you might have for God about things that are going on in your life. Once you’ve written them down, listen, and then write God’s response to you. He will respond! We just have to quiet ourselves enough to hear Him. Once you have finished writing what God has to say to you, you can pray a prayer like this: “Lord, I am in awe of You and in awe of Your amazing works. Thank You for hearing my prayers today, and thank You for speaking to me. I pray that I would stand firm on every word that You have said, and that I would believe in Your promises for me. I love You Lord, and I thank You for all that You have done, all that You are doing, and all that You will do. Amen!”
