One Day at a Time, Sweet Jesus

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. – Matthew 6: 28-34 NIV
Would you believe me if I told you that last Thursday in the gym I lifted almost 6½ tons? Well you can stop laughing, because I really did do just that. Now, mind you, it was not all at once. The machines I was lifting on adds the weights of each rep on every machine I use and totals it together. At the end, I had lifted 12,480lbs. That is just under 61/2 tons, one rep at a time.
The goal of this passage of Scripture is to seek the Kingdom of God. Earlier in this same chapter, our Lord taught us to pray for the Kingdom of God to come on earth, as it is in Heaven. (See Matthew 6: 9-10). That is not going to happen in just one big lift. It is going to take all of our efforts each and every day to bring that Kingdom closer to reality.
The Evil One knows that, so every day, he tries to throw obstacles, temptations, and distractions in our way to slow down the advancement of God’s Kingdom. If he can slow all of us down, then he stems the lordship of God in our lives and in the lives of others.
That is why Jesus reminds us to take it one day at a time in this text. Tomorrow will have more challenges, so just deal with what you can today. Seek His Kingdom first today. Then do it again the next and so on, but do it one day at a time. Do it one lift at a time. It will all add up.
Is Jesus the Lord of more of your life than He was ten years ago? Is He Lord of more of your life than He was yesterday? How do we improve that? You cannot do it all at once. You do it a little bit every day, and then you can look back and praise God for what He has done in your life.
Begin each day with a prayer like this:
Lord, take control of my life today. I yield my way to your way. Make your Kingdom come in me and help me advance your Kingdom in this world in some way today! Forgive my yesterday and you and I will worry about tomorrow then.
One day His Kingdom will come in all of its fullness, and our prayer should be, “Thank you God for letting me do my part - one day at a time.”
