Come, Let's Be Going

In John 14, Jesus speaks to His disciples about His impending departure. It’s a chapter filled with both truth and comfort. Jesus declares that He is the Way, offers reassurance in the face of coming grief, and promises the gift of the Holy Spirit.

As I was reading verses 30-31, something stood out:

I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me, but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going. – John 14:30-31 NLT

What struck me was the faith and confidence Jesus showed. He knew the enemy was coming for Him, and yet He also knew Satan had no power over Him. Jesus willingly submitted to doing what His Father required of Him to show the world His love for the Father.

Jesus was ready and willing to die to Himself, literally and spiritually. He understood that it would look, for a moment, as though death and the enemy had won. But He also knew that what the Father required would ultimately lead to victory.

Bad things are going to happen in this life. Hard times are going to come. And in those moments, we’ll face choices: Will we put Jesus first? In our homes? In our workplace? Or even in a simple place like the grocery store checkout line? It will not always be easy to do, but choosing Jesus and choosing to truly live for Him will require sacrifice and surrender.

How often do we view our surrenders, our dying to self, our sufferings through a faithless lens? We forget that “the Spirit that lives within us is greater than the spirit who lives in the world” (1 John 4:4) Instead of standing in faith, we turn our backs on God. We ignore Him for a while. We wallow in self-pity. But a faith-filled heart and mind would say, “Come, let’s be going.” I may know hardship is ahead, but if God requires it of me, then I will prove my love for the Father by walking out my faith.

What is it that you know you should be doing to show you love the Father?
What habits need surrendering today?
Have you forgotten that, as a child of God, Satan is powerless over you?
Are you walking in that truth?

Whatever it is that you are afraid of surrendering today, or committing to today, remember Jesus' promise:

I am leaving you with a gift–peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. (John 14:27)

Purpose today to live a life unafraid of the ruler of this world. Live fully committed to showing your love for the Father. Find community around you that is also willing to say, “Come, let’s be going.” Let's walk out our faith together.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for the promise of peace that only You can give when we choose to surrender to You. Help me have the faith and confidence You had as You willingly laid down Your life for me. Give me boldness where I am weak. Help me show the world that I choose You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
