It's Not About Me

For just as we have many parts in one body and all the body’s parts do not have the same function,so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another. – Romans 12:4-5

We have a young man on our football team, who is very talented, but his discipline and self-centered approach keep him from being a stronger asset to our team. His actions indicate he is more concerned about himself than he is the overall well-being of the team. I have taken on the task of trying to help him learn that.

Paul is trying to teach that to the young and developing church in Rome. As one of our church values reminds us, “we are better together.” I am not the center of the world, my church, or even my family. I help all of those organisms to be stronger by learning my gifts and my roles in them and not trying to do it all.

I believe our church staff is a great illustration of this truth. We all have different gifts, talents, and responsibilities. When we know our lane and stay in it, God blesses it with growth. Rarely do I see us stepping out of our lane; and when we do, it is with good intention. I believe God is pleased as we have come together to make the transition of moving offices to our new campus. While maintaining our ministerial roles, we have taken on tasks like structuring new office configurations, getting rid of clutter, painting, and cleaning. We have actually made it fun (well, some of it). It has been humbling for us and glorifying to God.

From time to time, I feel tempted to step into someone else' s realm and do things my way. I am learning to stay out of the way and let others do what they are called to do. That works out better than me trying to take over. Paul knew what he was talking about. Let each member do their part and the body is glorified.

My young football player scored the game winning touchdown last Friday night, instead of banging his chest and saying look at me, he celebrated with his teammates. A few minutes later, he was back to his old self. One step at a time, we will get him to see “it is not about me.”

Prayer | Help me, God, to see the place You have for me in Your Kingdom’s work. Help me to do my part with excellence and perseverance. Allow me to encourage my brothers and sisters to do their part and stay out of their way. May You be glorified in all that I do.
