Marriage Covenant

I have said for years that marriage is more about covenant relationship and commitment than anything else. Many couples have come to me over the years and have all asked me some variation of these questions; “What makes a successful marriage?” “What makes a marriage last and go beyond the test of time? ””What makes a marriage work?”
Covenant
Marriage is more than a ceremony, more than vows spoken on a wedding day, and more than the romance that often begins the journey. At its core, marriage is a covenant, a binding commitment before God and to one another. A covenant is not based on feelings, circumstances, or convenience. It is a sacred promise to remain faithful, to endure, to forgive, and to grow together through both joy and hardship.
Ephesians 5 paints marriage as a picture of Christ and the church. Jesus never abandons His bride. His covenant with us is eternal, unbreakable, and marked by sacrificial love. Just as Paul calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church, laying down His life, he also calls wives to honor and respect their husbands. Together, this reflects the deep mystery of God’s covenant love.
In marriage, there will be seasons of “better” and seasons of “worse.” The better feels easy, but the worse often tests the very foundation of our vows. And yet, Romans 8:38-39 reminds us that nothing can separate us from Christ’s love. If we are to mirror Him in marriage, then our commitment must echo that same unshakable faithfulness.
The world seeks loopholes, outs, and excuses. But covenant calls us higher—to fight for unity, to stay true to our vows, and to lean on God’s strength when our own feels insufficient. When we honor covenant, we not only build stronger marriages but also bear witness to the unwavering love of Christ for His church.
Prayer | Father, thank You for showing us through Jesus what true covenant love looks like. Help me to remember that marriage is not just about romance or convenience, but about a lifelong promise to love, forgive, and remain faithful. Strengthen me to live out my vows with humility, grace, and perseverance. Teach me to love like Christ loves His church, sacrificially and unconditionally. And Lord, remind me that just as nothing can separate me from Your love, I am called to mirror that same unwavering commitment in my marriage and in my devotion to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
