He Is Not Surprised

“Before a word is on my tongue, you, Lord, know it completely.” – Psalm 139:4 CSB

“I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from long ago what is not yet done, saying: my plan will take place, and I will do all my will.” – Isaiah 46:9–10 CSB

We all know what it feels like to be blindsided. A diagnosis. A phone call. A news headline. A loss. A shift that feels so sharp and sudden it leaves us breathless. We scramble to process, to adapt, to recover, all while quietly wondering: Where is God in this? Did He know? Did He see this coming?

The resounding answer in Scripture is, “yes.”

He is never surprised.

God does not operate on delay. He is not reacting. He is sovereign. He is present. And somehow, even in what feels chaotic to us, He is still in control.

Psalm 139 reminds us that even before we speak a word, He knows it fully. Every moment of our lives, before they ever unfold, is seen and held by Him. We don’t worship a God who is scrambling for Plan B. We worship the God who is the plan.

That doesn’t mean everything will feel easy. But it does mean everything can be entrusted to Him. What catches us off guard never catches Him off guard. His peace is available in the middle of our confusion, because His presence is already there.

Journal | Write down one situation that feels uncertain or unresolved right now. Then, in a second column, write a truth beside it. Example: “You already see this,” “You are still with me,” or “You are working even now.” Pray through each one.

Prayer | Lord, thank You that You are never surprised. Even when my circumstances feel uncertain or out of control, remind me that You are steady, wise, and near. Help me rest in the truth that You already know what’s ahead, and You’re not afraid of it. Thank you for being a trustworthy Father. Amen.
