My Every Need

“In God there is no hunger that needs to be filled, only plenteousness that desires to give.” C.S. Lewis

If we were all honest, how many arguments or frustrations have we had with those we love because we placed unfair expectations on them or expected them to meet a specific need? Probably a lot! God created all of us with basic needs and desires, but those things were always designed to push us back to Him and remind us of our dependency on Him. Where we often find our unmet needs is when we look to our spouses, children, friends, family or ourselves to fulfill our God-given desires and needs. When we find our fulfillment wholly through our relationship with God, then we can step into our relationships healthy and ready to give instead of receive.

How do we begin a journey of finding fulfillment for all of our innate needs? How do we really lean into The Lord for security, friendship, intimacy, peace, affection, honesty and trustworthiness? We must begin by spending quality time with Him, but how can that time look?

  1. Honesty | We must approach our Father with honesty. When we are honest with Him, it gives Him space to heal and bring life to the innermost parts of ourselves. It can be hard to know where to begin with being honest and processing how we are feeling. Starting with journaling and praying through the 5 W’s (Wows, Worries, Wishes, Wounds and Wisdoms) can be a helpful tool. What was the high of your day or week? What has caused you to worry or be anxious? What do you wish would happen? Was there something that happened today or this week that caused a wound in you or caused an old wound to resurface? Is there wisdom that you need? Journal those thoughts and submit them to The Lord!
  2. Slow Down | It’s hard to let our Heavenly Father speak to the deepest parts of our hearts when we are rushing from one thing to another. Block out some time on your calendar, even if it’s 5 minutes, to sit and spend time with The Lord. Take some deep breaths, pray, and invite Him to speak.
  3. Read The Word | Get in The Word! The Word is a way that Holy Spirit can speak and minister to our hearts. The Word is alive and active so when we read it, we are inviting God to give us a real and timely word specifically for us. Psalms 19 sums up what The Word of God does for our souls.

The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living. Reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair. They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb.  – Psalm 19:7-10 NLT

Take a few minutes today to put at least one of those steps into practice and allow our perfect Heavenly Father to satisfy your needs.

Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” – John 4:13-14 NLT

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19 NLT

Prayer | Father, thank You for being the Well that never runs dry. Thank You for fulfilling all of my needs and satisfying my every desire. Help me to turn to You instead of others or worldly things to satisfy me. I know that You are the only true thing that will satisfy me. Amen.
