Together with Him

“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” – Ephesians 2:4-7 NKJV
Three times, Paul uses the word together when speaking of our unity with Christ. I want to look at those three individually today, and I encourage you to take time to let this truth sink deeply into your heart.
Together in His Resurrection
While Christ has been resurrected, the promise for believers is that we will also be resurrected, not just spiritually, but physically as well.
“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” – Romans 8:15-17 NKJV
Scripture teaches us that through Christ’s death and resurrection, those who believe in Him have been adopted into the family of God. As His children, we are co-heirs with Christ. Every benefit of being God’s firstborn Son has been made available to us as God’s children and Christ’s brothers and sisters.
This promise goes beyond spiritual resurrection to include our physical resurrection. The early church knew this and clung to it. Even in the midst of persecution, they held onto this hope:
“The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, He will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.” – Romans 8:11 NLT
Together in His Ascension
We have access to the God of the universe because our Brother, Jesus, is seated at His right hand. Right now, He is interceding for you.
“So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” – Hebrews 4:14-16 NLT
The invitation is clear: since Jesus has gone before us, we have unlimited access to God. We can come boldly to receive grace and mercy, not because of our works, but because of His. He intercedes both for us and with us.
When I was a child, I loved Batman. Commissioner Gordon had something incredible, a bat phone. Unlimited access to Batman! We have something even greater. The Holy Spirit dwells within us, bringing unity with the Father and the Son. Through Him, we too have unlimited access to God.
Together in His Authority
Not only is Jesus interceding for us, but He is also seated in the position of ultimate authority.
“God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made Him head over all things for the benefit of the church.” – Ephesians 1:22 NLT
“Now Christ has gone to heaven. He is seated in the place of honor next to God, and all the angels and authorities and powers accept His authority.” – 1 Peter 3:22 NLT
This is vital for us to understand. God is not waiting to have power, He is already all-powerful. As His children and Christ’s brothers and sisters, we share in His authority. Not to carry out our own will, but His will on the earth.
When we pray in unity with Him, nothing can prevent His purposes from being fulfilled. Too often, we reduce prayer to mere confession, but it is so much more. Prayer is powerful. It is not only about our sins but also about God’s will being accomplished here on earth.
One day, Jesus will return. All things will be made new, brokenness will be healed, and the earth will be restored. Until that day, we must hold fast to the truth that we are together with Christ, in His resurrection, ascension, and authority, today.
Prayer | Father, thank You for uniting us with Christ in His resurrection, His ascension, and His authority. Help us to live daily in the awareness of this truth, walking in confidence, hope, and power that come only from You. Teach us to pray in alignment with Your will, trusting that through Christ, Your purposes will be fulfilled on earth as they are in heaven. Keep our eyes fixed on the promise of Christ’s return and the renewal of all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
