Marriage | Curse or Blessing

“Are you living out of the curse or the blessing?”
Pastor Aaron Kennedy asked this question during his recent message as part of the “How to Have a (not good) Great Marriage” message series. Let me tell you, it checked me big time as I reflected on my own marriage. It’s something I’m still processing, to be honest!
To the married folks reading this, ask yourself: Are you living out your marriage through the curse or the blessing?
Read | Genesis 3
The Curse
As a result of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, God says to Eve in Genesis 3:16 “...and you will desire to control your husband and he will rule over you”.
God’s original design for marriage was to be a loving partnership. Sin brought forth the curse causing husbands and wives to struggle for control, and this can lead to conflict, chaos, confusion and anxiety in marriage.
Take a moment and consider, what is the current state of your marriage?
Are you and your spouse living in cycles of tension and struggling for power?
Read | Ephesians 5:21-33
The Blessing
We don’t have to stay stuck in the curse. Ephesians 5:21 instructs the husband and wife to “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Being mutually submitted is the exact opposite of the curse. Instead of fighting for control, husband and wife are fighting for each other by putting aside selfish desires and prioritizing the others’ needs.
There is a way to live in unity with our spouse and trust God with the roles we have been called to live out in our marriage. It takes a daily commitment to love, serve, and forgive like Jesus. As we surrender our pride and need for control, we will see the beautiful blessing of marriage.
Prayer | Lord, bless the marriages of those reading this. Encourage and guide husbands and wives toward unity. Holy Spirit, come now and bring clarity on how to live in the blessing of marriage and not continue in the curse cycle. Amen.
