Clear Vision

I love going to the eye doctor. If you’ve ever been, you are familiar with the drill - “One or two; two or three,” as the optometrist switches lenses to ensure you receive the appropriate prescription. I enjoy the process as much as I enjoy my doctor’s reassurance that we will find the right lenses to help me see 20/20. I go into each appointment hopeful that I am going to have clearer vision (and a cute set of frames) when I leave!
As much as I enjoy the process of having my eyes checked, I will admit that I do not complete my annual checkup every year. Things come up, the kids have an event, work is crazy, and before you know it, I’ve forgotten to schedule it.
Why do I share this story with you? Because for many of us, this describes our process of reading the Word, as well.
"Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.”
- Proverbs 29:18
Proverbs 29:18 tells us that without guidance, purpose, or a clear understanding of a divine purpose (vision), people will lose their way. So how do we gain spiritual understanding? While there are many ways to hear from God, reading the Word remains one of the most essential spiritual practices.
“All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” - 2 Timothy 3:16
Time spent in the Word is much like sitting in the optometrist’s chair. It allows for an adjustment in our lenses to see as God does, providing us with His vision – a holy perspective. Consistent time in the Word allows for learning, correcting, and training. Simply put, reading the Word equips us to do the good work that God calls us to.
Reflection | Consider your own spiritual practices and, specifically, reading the Word. How has consistency in this spiritual practice shaped your walk with the Lord?
If you have not yet developed the consistent habit of spending time in the Word, what keeps you from doing so? What is one action that you can start doing today to strengthen this spiritual discipline?
Prayer | Thank You, Heavenly Father, for giving us Your Word. Thank You for allowing it to shape our perspective, to teach us Your ways, and to draw us closer to You. I pray that You will provide us with wisdom to understand what we are reading and use it to equip us to be Your hands and feet on this side of heaven. In Jesus name, Amen.
