I Am, Part 3 | Jesus, The Gate That Gives Life

Key Thought | Jesus doesn’t just show us the way to life. He is the way we enter it.

Key Scripture | “Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.”  —John 10:9

As we continue this seven-part journey through the “I Am” statements of Jesus, we begin to see a beautiful progression. In Part 1, Jesus revealed Himself as the Bread of Life, the One who satisfies our deepest hunger. In Part 2, He declared Himself the Light of the World, the One who leads us out of darkness. Now, Jesus speaks about access. About entry. About how life with God actually begins.

Jesus says plainly, “I am the gate.” In His time, a shepherd would often lie across the opening of the sheepfold at night. There was no other way in or out. The shepherd himself became the gate—protecting the sheep, watching over them, and ensuring their safety.
By calling Himself the Gate, Jesus is saying that life, freedom, and salvation are not found through systems, shortcuts, or self-effort. They are found through Him. Entry into God’s care isn’t earned; it’s received.

Jesus also contrasts Himself with thieves and robbers, those who promise life but take instead. We’ve all felt the pull of voices that claim fulfillment, security, or identity, only to leave us more restless than before. Jesus doesn’t manipulate or force His way in. He invites. He stands at the entrance and offers Himself as the safe way forward.

What’s striking is what Jesus promises on the other side of the gate: freedom and good pasture. This isn’t confinement; it’s care. Life with Him isn’t smaller; it’s fuller. Not driven by fear, but shaped by trust.

Jesus doesn’t rush us through the gate. He simply stands there, steady and patient, inviting us to trust Him with our entry points—our decisions, our direction, our lives. Wherever you are right now, He is offering you a way that leads to freedom and care.

Prayer | Jesus, thank You for being the Gate, my safe place of entry into life with God. Help me recognize the voices I’ve trusted that don’t lead to life. Teach me to trust You more fully and to rest in the freedom You offer. Amen.

  • What voices have been shaping your sense of direction or security lately?
  • Where might Jesus be inviting you to trust Him as the way forward?
