From the Inside Out | Wholehearted, Part 1

Key Thought | God’s transformation begins in the heart and flows outward into the soul and mind.
Key Scripture | “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” —Matthew 22:37 NLT
When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, He didn’t start with behavior. He didn’t begin with rules or outward actions. Instead, He went straight to the center of who we are.
Love God with your heart, soul, and mind.
This is important because the world teaches the opposite approach. The world’s model is outside in. If you behave better, perform better, achieve more, then maybe you will become someone worthy of love or peace.
But God’s model is inside out. Everything begins with the heart.
Scripture tells us, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).
The beliefs buried deep within us shape the direction of our lives. Many of us carry beliefs we didn’t even realize we adopted along the way:
I’m a mistake.
I’m alone.
God must be disappointed in me.
I have to take care of everything myself.
I’m not worthy of love.
Those beliefs quietly shape how we see God, how we see others, and how we see ourselves.
But God doesn’t simply ask us to try harder. He offers something far better: a new heart.
Through the prophet Ezekiel, God made this promise: “I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.” (Ezekiel 36:26).
God’s work in us begins at the deepest level of who we are. He replaces hard places with tenderness. He rewrites lies with truth. He plants His Spirit within us so that our lives begin to move in a new direction.
From that transformed heart flows the soul: our mind, will, and emotions. When the Holy Spirit fills our lives, He begins producing fruit within us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
The Holy Spirit is the oil our emotions were meant to run on. Without Him, our inner life sputters and stalls. With Him, something beautiful begins to grow.
Then our mind begins to change as well. Scripture reminds us to live quiet, faithful lives that reflect wisdom and integrity (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12). Knowledge alone cannot transform us. Information does not heal the soul.
Wisdom comes when knowledge turns into following.
When we allow God to shape our heart, guide our soul, and renew our mind, our lives begin to reflect something the world cannot manufacture.
Transformation that flows from the inside out.
God isn’t asking you to perform your way into transformation. He is inviting you to let Him begin with your heart. Today, ask Him to reveal any belief you’ve carried that isn’t aligned with His truth, and allow His Spirit to begin reshaping the deepest parts of you.
Prayer | Lord, thank You that You care about more than just my behavior. You care about my heart. Where I have believed lies about myself or about You, replace them with Your truth. Soften the places that have become hard, and fill me with Your Spirit. Help my life reflect the work You are doing inside of me. Amen.

Reflections
- Are there beliefs about yourself or about God that may be shaping your life more than His truth?
- In what ways might God be inviting you to allow Him to transform your heart rather than simply changing outward behaviors?
