Build a Life That Lasts | Faithful, Part 7

Key Truth | Faithfulness is cultivated as we intentionally abide in Christ and depend on the Holy Spirit.

Key Scripture | “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.”—Jude 20–21 (NKJV)

It is one thing to recognize deception. It is another thing to remain faithful.

After spending much of his letter exposing false teachers and warning believers about compromise, Jude shifts his focus. His concern is no longer simply, "Watch out for them." Instead, he lovingly tells God's people, "This is how you remain strong." Rather than living in fear of deception, we are invited to intentionally cultivate a faith that is deeply rooted in Christ.

He begins by saying, "Building yourselves up on your most holy faith." Healthy buildings don't happen by accident, and neither do healthy Christians. Every day we are building something. The choices we make, the habits we develop, and the time we spend in God's Word are all shaping the foundation of our faith. Faithfulness is rarely the result of one dramatic decision. More often, it is formed through thousands of quiet acts of obedience that, over time, produce a life firmly anchored in Christ.

Jude then tells us how that faith is strengthened: "Praying in the Holy Spirit." Prayer is so much more than presenting God with a list of requests. It is where our hearts are aligned with His, our strength is renewed, and our faith is built. To pray in the Spirit is to pray under the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit rather than relying solely on our own understanding.

For many believers, one beautiful expression of praying in the Spirit is the gift of praying in tongues. Paul writes that "he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself" (1 Corinthians 14:4). The word edifies means to build up or strengthen, beautifully echoing Jude's instruction to build ourselves up in our most holy faith. There are moments when words simply aren't enough—when grief, uncertainty, or longing run too deep to express. In those moments, the Holy Spirit graciously helps us pray. Whether through words we understand or through a spiritual language He gives, God has provided a way for His children to be strengthened in His presence.

Praying in tongues is never about appearing more spiritual than someone else. It isn't a badge of honor or a performance. It is a gracious gift that draws believers into deeper communion with God and strengthens the inner person as we yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit.

Jude continues, "Keep yourselves in the love of God." He isn't suggesting that we earn God's love—that was fully secured through the finished work of Jesus Christ. Instead, he is inviting us to remain close enough to continually experience and respond to that love. As we abide in Christ through prayer, worship, obedience, and His Word, His love becomes the atmosphere in which our faith grows and flourishes.

Finally, Jude reminds us to keep "looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life." Faithful believers never lose sight of eternity. Our hope isn't found in politics, cultural acceptance, financial security, or personal success. Our hope has always been, and will always be, Jesus Christ. We live with joyful expectation because the Savior who redeemed us has promised that one day He will return for His people.

There is something beautifully intentional about Jude's encouragement. He calls us to build, pray, remain, and look. None of those things happen accidentally. God faithfully supplies the grace, and the Holy Spirit faithfully supplies the power, but we are invited to respond with daily obedience. A life that stands firm in an age of compromise isn't built in a single moment. It's built one prayer at a time, one surrender at a time, one act of obedience at a time, and one day in God's presence after another. Over the course of a lifetime, God shapes a believer whose faith is strong enough to withstand every storm.

In an age of compromise, God is not looking for louder Christians. He is looking for faithful ones.

Challenge | This week, choose one intentional step to strengthen your walk with Christ. Spend a little extra time in His Word, linger longer in prayer, or simply sit quietly in His presence and invite the Holy Spirit to build your faith. Remember, a life that stands firm isn't formed overnight. It is shaped day by day as we remain close to the One who faithfully holds us.

Reflection
  • How intentional are you about building your faith?
  • Has your prayer life become routine, or are you regularly allowing the Holy Spirit to strengthen your inner life through time in God’s presence?
  • If God has given you the gift of praying in tongues, are you making it a regular part of your personal devotional life?

Prayer | Father, thank You for giving me everything I need to remain faithful. Build my life upon the unshakable foundation of Your Word. Teach me to pray in the power of the Holy Spirit and to depend on You more than I depend on myself. Strengthen my inner life, deepen my love for Your presence, and help me remain rooted in Your love every day. Keep my eyes fixed on Jesus and fill me with joyful expectation as I await His return. May my life be marked by unwavering faithfulness until I see You face to face. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
