He Is Worthy | Worship, Part 9
Key Truth | Jesus is always worthy. When our worship is rooted in His unchanging worth instead of our changing circumstances, praise becomes the natural response of a heart that has truly seen Him.
Key Scripture | “And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood…’” — Revelation 5:9 NKJV
If there is one word that captures the heart of worship, it is this: Worthy.
We don't worship because we enjoy the music or because the atmosphere moves our emotions. We don't worship because life is easy or because every prayer has been answered. We worship because Jesus is worthy.
That truth is the foundation of every song we sing, every prayer we pray, every hand we lift, every knee we bow, and every act of surrender we offer. Long before worship is about our response, it is about His worth.
When John was caught up into heaven in the book of Revelation, he witnessed something extraordinary. The worship surrounding God's throne wasn't forced, manufactured, or dependent on circumstances. It was simply the natural response of those who had seen Jesus as He truly is.
The elders fell before Him, the angels lifted their voices, and every creature joined the chorus.
No one had to invite them to worship because no one who truly sees Jesus has to be convinced that He is worthy.
Heaven has already answered the question we sometimes still wrestle with on earth.
Is He worthy?
The answer echoes throughout eternity: Yes.
Worthy of honor.
Worthy of glory.
Worthy of power.
Worthy of praise.
Worthy of everything.
One of the greatest differences between heaven's worship and ours is the basis for it. We often evaluate worship through the lens of our feelings, while heaven worships because of who Jesus is. His worth never rises or falls with circumstances because His character never changes.
Some days we'll wake up full of joy. Other days we'll carry grief, disappointment, or unanswered questions. There will be seasons when God's presence feels especially near and others when faith requires perseverance. But through every season, His holiness remains the same. His mercy never changes. His faithfulness never fails. His love never wavers.
If our worship depends on our feelings, it will always fluctuate.
If it is rooted in His worth, it will remain steady.
That's why David could say, "I will bless the Lord at all times." Not because every day was easy, but because God was always worthy.
Paul and Silas understood that truth as they sang from a prison cell. Job understood it after unimaginable loss. The elders in heaven understand it every moment they cast their crowns before the throne.
Different circumstances, but the same conclusion.
He is worthy.
Perhaps that's why one of the greatest obstacles to worship is where we choose to fix our attention. When our eyes remain on ourselves, we're consumed by our weaknesses, disappointments, questions, and fears. But when we lift our eyes to Jesus, we see His beauty, His majesty, His grace, and His victory.
Our circumstances may not have changed, but our focus has. And when our focus changes, worship begins to rise naturally from our hearts.
As I prepared this devotional, I found myself thinking about one of the original worship songs that has become part of the story of our church. Several years ago, our Worship Director, Tray Stepney, wrote a song simply titled "Worthy." As we celebrate forty years of God's faithfulness, that title feels especially meaningful.
Because long before we ever sang that song...Heaven was already singing it.
"Worthy is the Lamb who was slain."
My prayer is that long after every one of us is gone, that declaration will still be rising from this house—not simply because it's the title of a song, but because it has become the settled confession of every heart that walks through these doors.
May every generation that calls Opendoor home settle this truth once and for all: Jesus is worthy.
Worthy of our praise.
Worthy of our surrender.
Worthy of our obedience.
Worthy of our lives.
Whether the prayer has been answered or not.
Whether the breakthrough has come or not.
Whether the diagnosis has changed or not.
Whether the future is clear or not.
He is worthy.
Not because of what He gives us...But because of who He is.
One day our faith will become sight. Every distraction will disappear, every fear will be gone, and every earthly opinion will fade away as we join the song that has never ceased around His throne:
"Worthy is the Lamb who was slain!"
So why wait until heaven?
Let's begin singing that song today.
Today, before asking Jesus for anything, simply spend time telling Him why He is worthy. Thank Him for His holiness, His mercy, His faithfulness, His cross, His resurrection, and His constant love. Let your worship be rooted not in what He has done for you alone, but in who He is.
Reflection | Take a moment to consider what has been shaping your worship lately. Has it been rooted more in your circumstances or in the unchanging worth of Christ?
Prayer | Lord Jesus, You are worthy of every song, every breath, and every moment of my life. Forgive me for the times I have allowed my circumstances to shape my worship instead of fixing my eyes on Your unchanging worth. Open my heart to see You more clearly, and never let me lose the wonder of Your grace or the beauty of Your presence.
Teach me to worship You because of who You are, not merely because of what You have done for me. May my life become a continual declaration that You alone are worthy of all honor, glory, praise, and obedience. Receive my worship, my gratitude, and my whole heart. In Your holy name, Jesus, amen.
