Known and Still Chosen | Come Close, Part 3
Key Truth | Jesus knew every weakness, struggle, and failure before He called us, yet He chose to love us and invite us into His purpose anyway.
Key Scripture | “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”— Romans 5:8 (NLT)
Most of us have parts of our story we would rather leave out.
There are decisions we wish we could change, reactions we are not proud of, seasons when we wandered, and moments when we knew better but still got it wrong.
Because of that, it can be easy to imagine that God chose us based on who He hoped we would eventually become. But that is not how grace works.
When God chose you, He already knew you.
He knew the strong parts and the fragile ones. He knew where you would grow quickly and where you would struggle repeatedly. He knew every moment of obedience and every moment you would fall short.
And He loved you anyway.
Jesus demonstrated this throughout His earthly ministry. He surrounded Himself with imperfect people. His disciples misunderstood Him, argued about who was greatest, struggled with fear, acted impulsively, and occasionally said exactly the wrong thing.
Peter may be the clearest example.
Jesus knew Peter would deny Him before Peter knew it himself. He even warned him that it was coming. Yet Jesus also prayed for Peter and spoke about what would happen after his failure: “When you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”
Jesus saw the failure, but He also saw beyond it.
That does not mean our choices do not matter. Sin has consequences. Failure can hurt us and the people around us. Repentance is necessary.
But our failures never surprise Jesus.
There is something freeing about realizing that God did not call an idealized version of you. He called you.
Romans tells us that Christ died for us “while we were still sinners.” His love did not begin after we cleaned ourselves up. Grace moved toward us while we still desperately needed grace.
Sometimes shame tells us that if God really knew everything, He would pull away. The Gospel tells us the opposite.
He already knows...and He came closer.
You are fully known and still deeply loved. That love does not leave us unchanged; it gives us a safe place from which transformation can begin.
You do not have to hide your brokenness from Jesus. He knew the whole story when He invited you to follow Him.
Consider the part of your story you are most tempted to hide or allow shame to define. Bring it honestly before Jesus. Where repentance is needed, repent. But then receive His grace and ask Him to help you see yourself through the truth that you are fully known and still deeply loved.

Prayer | Jesus, thank You for knowing me completely and loving me fully. You know the parts of my story I am proud of and the parts I would rather hide. Help me bring everything into Your light. Give me humility to repent when I have sinned and faith to receive Your grace when shame tells me to stay stuck. Thank You that my failures do not surprise You and that Your love continues to call me forward. Amen.
