Stop Fighting To Be Chosen | Held by the Promise, Part 6

Key Truth | When we know where we belong, we no longer have to compete for a place that is already ours.

Key Scripture | “For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God's children.” — Romans 8:16 NLT

The tension between Jacob and Esau involved more than inheritance. Beneath the birthright, the blessing, the manipulation, and the rivalry was something much more personal.

Both brothers wanted to know they were chosen.

Isaac preferred Esau. Rebekah preferred Jacob. Instead of home being the place where both sons learned security, it became an environment where affection was divided and comparison was built into the family dynamic.

That kind of insecurity has a way of following us.

We may not fight over a father's blessing the way Jacob and Esau did, but many of us spend years trying to prove we deserve a place.

We want to be the favorite employee, the most dependable friend, the impressive parent, the successful sibling, the person everyone needs. We may even carry that same striving into our relationship with God.

If I do enough, maybe I will know He is pleased with me.
If I perform well enough, maybe I will finally feel secure.
If I can become more like someone else, maybe I will feel chosen too.

The problem with living for approval is that there is always someone else to compare ourselves with.

Someone will appear more gifted.
Someone will receive an opportunity we wanted.
Someone will be recognized while our contribution goes unnoticed.

If our identity depends on being chosen by people, their choices will continually determine our worth. The gospel gives us something far more secure.

Through Jesus, we have been brought into the family of God. We are not standing outside hoping to earn enough approval to be invited in. We belong. That security changes the way we relate to other people.

When someone else succeeds, we can celebrate them because their blessing does not threaten ours. When someone overlooks us, it may hurt, but it does not redefine us. When comparison starts whispering, we can return to the deeper truth: I already know whose I am.

Notice where you are most likely to compete for approval. Instead of asking what you need to do to be chosen, begin with what God has already said about your place in His family.

Reflection
  • Whose approval has the most power to change the way you feel about yourself?
  • How would greater security in God's love change the way you respond when someone else is celebrated?

Prayer | Father, thank You that I do not have to compete for a place in Your family. Teach me to live from belonging instead of striving for it. Heal the places in me that constantly compare, perform, or seek approval. Help me become secure enough in Your love that I can genuinely celebrate the people around me. Amen.
