God Is In This Place | Held by the Promise, Part 9

Key Truth | We often discover God's presence in places that seemed completely ordinary until He opened our eyes.
Key Scripture | “When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.’” — Genesis 28:16 NIV
Jacob was not searching for a holy place. He was traveling. He had left home carrying the tension of everything that had happened with Esau. He was moving toward an uncertain future, and when the sun went down, he simply stopped for the night.
There was no sanctuary. No worship team. No special atmosphere. Just ground beneath him and a stone near enough to use as a pillow.
And that became the place where God met him.
Jacob dreamed of a stairway reaching between heaven and earth. God spoke to him and reaffirmed the promises given to Abraham and Isaac. When Jacob woke, he was overwhelmed by a realization: God had been there, and he did not know it.
There is something deeply comforting in that.
We often assume meaningful encounters with God will happen in extraordinary moments. Sometimes they do. But Scripture repeatedly shows us a God who meets people in fields, kitchens, deserts, boats, roadsides, workplaces, homes, prisons, and ordinary days.
Maybe the issue is not that God is absent. Maybe we are simply unaware. Ordinary seasons can make us spiritually sleepy.
We move through familiar routines without expecting much. We wake up, go to work, take care of children, answer emails, make dinner, run errands, and repeat the process tomorrow. Nothing feels especially significant.
But what if God is already present there?
Jacob's location became significant because God revealed Himself in it. The ground had looked ordinary moments earlier. The same can be true in our lives.
God may meet us in a conversation we almost overlooked. He may answer something through a Scripture we have read many times before. He may reveal His kindness through a quiet moment, an interruption, a person, or even a season we originally wanted to escape.
We do not have to wait until life becomes extraordinary to find God. Sometimes we simply need to become more aware of the God who is already here.
Slow down somewhere ordinary today. Before rushing into the next task, pray a simple prayer: “God, help me recognize You here.” Pay attention without demanding something dramatic.
Reflection
Prayer | God, make me more aware of Your presence. Forgive me for the times I have assumed that ordinary meant insignificant. Open my eyes to the ways You are speaking, leading, comforting, and revealing Yourself in the places I already am. Help me recognize that any place can become holy when I become aware of You there. Amen.
