Rekindle the Fire
If you’ve been a parent for any amount of time, you’ve probably made a cup of coffee or hot tea with every intention of drinking it while it’s hot. As we all know, that rarely happens. No sooner do we finish stirring in our creamer or sprinkling something sweet than we hear our name called from the other room, and it sounds urgent. Finally returning to our much-needed drink, we find that it’s cooled to a disappointing temperature. This continues on throughout the day, heating and reheating the same cup over and over, until we finally drink it or toss it in the sink.
Nobody likes a lukewarm beverage. It’s just plain lifeless and dull. As it loses its warmth, it loses its purpose and is no longer effective in our lives.
“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!” - Revelation 3:15-16 NLT
Just as the lukewarm drink loses its effectiveness, so also do we when we become lukewarm with God. It’s easy to become distracted by the world around us. We’ve got busy schedules, seasons, and lives. Our days are packed with all of the things, not even counting unexpected events.
Next thing we know, our walk with the Lord has grown cold. We start skipping our quiet time with Jesus in the morning, forgetting to pray on the way to work, and making excuses instead of going to church. How can we stay on fire for God when we never spend time with Him?
Journal: Has the busyness of life caused you to become lukewarm in your walk with the Lord? Share about it.
There is power in the presence of the Lord; there is wisdom in His mighty name. When we stay rooted in His Word, we stay grounded in the Source of our Faith. Only He can keep the fire burning.
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. - Romans 12:11
Activation: Release all that is keeping you lukewarm in your relationship with God today. Let go of any distractions that stand in your way. Return to the presence of the Lord and do whatever it takes to stay there. He has so much more to offer.
Prayer: God, help me lay aside my busy schedules, appointments, and to-do’s. Help me turn my focus back to You. Drown out the noise of the world around me so that I may sit in Your presence and draw my strength from only You. - Amen
