Journey of Trust

When I was teenager, I dreamed of what it would be like to get married. I was convinced that the person I would marry would be my best friend, know literally everything about me, and it would be this effortless fairytale. It wasn’t long after being engaged to my now husband that I realized how unrealistic that expectation was. Relationships aren’t built overnight, no matter how much you love one another. When my husband and I were married, we did not know everything about each other, and believe it or not, he couldn’t read my mind. Imagine that! What I didn’t know is that reality would be so much sweeter than what I had imagined my entire childhood. My husband and I were embarking on a lifelong journey of growing in trusting one another.

Our relationship with Jesus often looks this way too. Whenever we first enter into a relationship with God, we believe that is it. We have salvation, and we know God loves us. What more could we need? But there is an endless journey ahead of us, growing in our faith and trust in our relationship with God. That journey of learning to trust Him only happens as we walk through life with Him. Our trust in Him grows when we experience His goodness and faithfulness firsthand, much like how I trust my husband more after we walk through situations together and he continues to love and show up for me. Trust is a lifelong journey.

However, learning to trust God is not an easy journey. It is much easier to place our trust and our confidence in the things of this world.

JOURNAL: Take a moment to reflect and then journal about the areas in your life where you are still learning to trust God.

The encouraging thing to remember is that we are all learning how to trust God more in every area of our lives all the time! There is no finish line that marks when we have learned to completely trust God with everything. There’s always more in which to learn and grow while we live on this earth.

READ: Mark 9:20-24

As we learn to trust God and His faithfulness to us, all we have to do is ask for God’s help. He sees our humanness, and He wants to help us on the journey of trusting Him. If you are facing a situation where you are struggling to hand over control to God then simply ask for Him to help you.

PRAYER: Father, thank You for Your Word that is full of countless times You have been faithful to Your people. I know that You promise in Your Word to take care of us, but right now I’m having a hard time trusting that to be true. Help me overcome my unbelief of Your promises to me. I want to hand over control of this situation to You. Take my trust in You deeper through this situation. Thank you for your grace and kindness through this. I am choosing to trust You today. Amen.
