Holy Spirit, Lead

“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves…”

Any perfectionists reading this right now? Any chronic people pleasers? As someone recovering from both, I know how daunting the life of a Believer can feel. Jesus sent Holy Spirit to help us and allow us to walk in freedom, and yet we use our walk with Holy Spirit to put even more pressure on ourselves. We feel like we have to represent Him well and reflect Jesus for people when in reality, we have gotten it so backward. He didn’t ask us to stop living in our sinful nature so Holy Spirit could guide us. He said Holy Spirit would guide us and then we would stop doing what our sinful nature craves. How freeing is that? If we live in relationship with Holy Spirit, He will help us walk in freedom from sin.

All of this sounds great in theory, but how do we know that we are actually walking with Holy Spirit? It’s actually a lot simpler than we make it out to be. Paul lays it out very clearly in Galatians 5, what it looks like when we are allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us in our daily lives.

Read: Galatians 5:16-26

When you are following Holy Spirit then you will begin to see good fruit in your life. That looks like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. This is the natural product of us allowing Holy Spirit to take the lead in our lives. So be encouraged! If you are more patient, more kind, more loving, more joyful, more peaceful, more faithful, more disciplined, more gentle today than you were when you began following Holy Spirit’s guidance then there is evidence in your life that you are living by the Spirit’s power.

Journal: What fruits of the Spirit are you seeing more of in your life recently?

Journal: Galatians 5:25 says “Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” Is there a part of your life you are not allowing Holy Spirit to lead you in?

Pray: Father, thank You for the gift of Holy Spirit. Your desire is for me to not do this life alone or live in bondage, which is why You sent us The Helper. I am so grateful for the freedom You offer us. Show me the places where I’m not following Holy Spirit. Forgive me for not trusting You more and instead trying to take control. Teach me how to trust You and Your leadership in even the most uncomfortable places in my life. I know Your love for me is immeasurable and You will take care of me. I want everything that You have for me. Thank You for Your Grace and guidance. Amen.
