Do You Even Know Me?

Is there anything worse than being unknown? Maybe you've had that awkward moment when you encounter someone whom you think should know you. You may have even introduced yourself to them several times prior, and yet they simply don’t know who you are. There is something seemingly hard-wired in us to want to be seen, known, and heard. Much of Scripture points us to the idea that God knows us even more profoundly than we know ourselves, which is awesome and beautiful. He is a good Father who loves His children. But in Matthew 7:21- 23, we see this…

“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

This can be harrowing because on the surface, it contradicts all that we may have known about God as our Father, but it is actually the opposite. What we see is that God gives us the opportunity to not simply know Him or be known by Him. What He offers to us is a relationship.

And just like our earthly relationships, it cannot be one-sided. God offers us intimacy, but we must also seek out intimacy with Him. Continually seeking to follow after Him brings us to a place of a deeper relationship with Him.
