Standing on the Rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock,
The wise man built his house upon the rock,
The wise man built his house upon the rock,
And the rain came tumbling down.
The rain came down and the floods came up…
And the house on the rock stood firm.
The foolish man built his house upon the sand,
The foolish man built his house upon the sand,
The foolish man built his house upon the sand,
And the rain came tumbling down.
The rain came down and the floods came up…
And the house on the sand went "SPLAT!"
So, build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ,
Build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ,
Build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ,
And the blessings will come down.
The blessings will come down as the prayers go up…
So, build your life on the Rock.
If you grew up in Sunday School, you probably remember singing this song and the hand motions that went along with it. It’s a catchy tune that may stay with you the rest of the week! Although we may not have fully understood its words when we were little, this childhood song is packed with truth.
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law. - Matthew 7:24-29 NLT
Our family is currently having a house built. It’s the first time we’ve ever built, so we’re learning along the way. The one thing that quickly became clear to us was that this wasn’t a quick process at all. So much goes into the preparation before one even breaks ground. But it’s all very important. If the footings go in wrong, then the foundation is off. If the foundation is off, the framing will be crooked. If the framing is crooked, we’ve got a real mess on our hands and a house that won’t make it through the first high wind!
The same is true for our lives. If we don’t build our foundation on the Word of God, then we cannot withstand the storms of life; and the storms of life will come. It’s just a matter of when!
Things we can do to build a firm foundation:
JOURNAL: What has God shown you throughout the message series, Sermon on the Mount?
ACTIVATION: Look at the list above and write down the ones you struggle with. Work on getting stronger in those areas.
PRAYER: Write out a prayer asking God to help you with the areas in which you struggle. Ask Him to help you with all that He has revealed to you through this message series.

- Read the Bible daily.
- Pray without ceasing. (throughout our day)
- Memorize Scripture to fight the thoughts of the enemy.
