Keep Digging
In Genesis 26:1- 4, God appears to Isaac, tells him what to do, and then leaves him with a promise. Notice that God doesn't reveal every little detail to Isaac.
READ: Genesis 26:1-3
A severe famine now struck the land, as had happened before in Abraham’s time. So Isaac moved to Gerar, where Abimelech, king of the Philistines, lived. The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt, but do as I tell you. Live here as a foreigner in this land, and I will be with you and bless you. I hereby confirm that I will give all these lands to you and your descendants, just as I solemnly promised Abraham, your father.
REFLECT:
Have you ever received a promise from God or a nudging by His Spirit to take a step of faith even when it didn’t make sense nor did it turn out the way you had hoped? Were you tempted to doubt God’s Word or His faithfulness?
JOURNAL: Write down a time when you felt this way.
Issac learned from his father Abraham and received the promise that God had given to Abraham. When God visited Issac in Genesis 26, He told him to stay in the land of Gerar and do not go down to Egypt.
Issac listened to God and stayed in the land of Gerar where he was a foreigner. While in this land, he reopened the wells his father’s servants had dug. This created disputes and envy among the people because God was clearly with Isaac and blessing him abundantly.
When they encountered trouble, not once did Issac nor his servants give up digging and reopening the wells. Issac remained steadfast until they found a well in an open space without dispute.
Isaac's faith and trust in God has encouraged me recently. If I were Issac, I would be like, “Hey Jesus, can you tell me what well? How long will it take and what’s next?” More often than not, God reveals His will to us in next steps. Very rarely does He show us the entire staircase.
Good thing, Issac didn't know they would have to re-dig several wells before finding water without dispute.
What does it look like today for you to remain steadfast?
How is God calling you to put your faith into action, even if it’s hard?
REMEMBER:
Galatians 6:9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
James 1:12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
PRAYER: Jesus, I need Your help today to remain steadfast. My heart is to remain unwavering and focused on You in the waiting, while in the battle, in the unknown, and in what seems impossible. I trust You at Your word to complete that which You have promised. Amen
