Holy Spirit, The Helper

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. - John 16:13

I love that the ministry of Jesus did not end once He ascended to the Father. The ministry of the Holy Spirit continues the work of Jesus Christ within every believer every day. Jesus calls the Holy Spirit “the Helper.” Holy Spirit is translated in the Greek as “one who is called to help someone else.” It refers to someone as an advisor, legal defender, mediator, or intercessor. We can confidently say each day that we have a legal right to call on the Helper, the Holy Spirit, because of the finished work of Jesus. The Holy Spirit isn’t another level of higher knowledge to gain or another step in the ladder to becoming a better person. He is a present standby and constant strengthener who guides and teaches us how to walk in fellowship with Jesus and in holiness. Yet what I love most is that He’s ready to fulfill my request of Him every morning, which is simply stated, “Help me, Holy Spirit.” I enjoy praying this as often as I can because it reminds me that Jesus said in John chapter sixteen verse thirteen, “the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth who guides me into all truth.” And the truth of the matter is that I am always in need of Him.

The Holy Spirit provides me with the awareness I need to ask Him for help. The ministry of Jesus continues in us when we call upon the Holy Spirit to help us. The truth is that you have a helper, and you aren’t alone. Often, it can feel as though we’re battling alone, experiencing hardship alone, or trying to walk out the call of God on our life alone. In these moments or seasons, it’s paramount that we remember Jesus did not leave us alone; He left us for a season. Though He’s not physically with us today, the Spirit of God lives in us today and He relays what He receives from the Son. He testifies that we are His witnesses; and while we can’t predict the future or know precisely what’s ahead, we do know who’s going with us. Maybe that’s truly what we need to know. We might think we need to know the when, what, and why. But maybe a step of faith toward God begins with the Helper.

PRAYER: Each day this next week, simply pray, “Holy Spirit, help me.”

RESPONSE: Write down how the Holy Spirit helped you each day.
