The Gentleman, The Holy Spirit

What do you wish you had learned about the Holy Spirit when you were young? Maybe it is just an attribute that you really wish you could have embraced when you were a child, or even in your twenties.

For me, my Holy Spirit journey started very young at Youth Camp during my middle school years. I knew that He was someone I needed in my life, but I was nervous to give Him full reign. Although I came from a very charismatic church, I was wildly introverted and shy, which left me constantly feeling that maybe the Holy Spirit didn't really fit with me and my personality. I was often intimidated and uncomfortable during spiritual encounters in our worship services.

So for me, the one thing I wish I had known about Him sooner would be that the Holy Spirit is simply God in us; He is a gentleman.

The Amplified version of John 16:7 says: “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you].”

Man, If I only knew. The Holy Spirit is NOT going to take over my body and make me run laps around the sanctuary, but He will heal my heart, mind, and body. The Holy Spirit is not going to force me to speak in tongues before I'm ready to take part in the fullness of that gift, but He will give me the words to help lift up a friend in need. He is what we need when we are ready. He will convict us and grow our relationship deeper with Him. He isn't there to bring attention to Himself, but to draw people to Jesus.

Jesus went away so that He could send the Holy Spirit to be with everyone at all times. He speaks to us and through us in a way that we can comprehend as very unique individuals. He may speak to you differently than He talks to your best friend or spouse, but He is speaking.

JOURNAL: Study the Spiritual Gifts of The Spirit found in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, write down questions, and ask Him to show you.

PRAYER: Thank You for the opportunity to learn more about You and, in turn, more about me. Turn up Your voice in my ears, and turn down the noise and distractions of the world around me. Thank You for sending me a guide, a helper, and a teacher. Grow my faith as I lean more into You. Amen
