Trust and Obey

Obeying a prompt from the Holy Spirit can be one of the most difficult yet important things we can do in our spiritual life. There have been so many times in my life where I felt prompted to act on something. I wish I could say that I listened and obeyed more than not. It could be a prompt to help or encourage another person; it could be something that might help me. Or it could be that God simply wants me to obey without giving me a full understanding of the situation. Whatever it is, it’s important that we simply do it.

So often in my own life, I find myself fighting within my spirit and trying to convince myself that I’m mistaken about something I heard or felt. My internal dialogue may go something like this: “No, that isn’t God” (When in reality, I know it is), or “No, I can’t do that; that person will think I’m weird,” or one of my least favorite, “No, that is way too inconvenient.” The Holy Spirit is how God communes with those who desire to have a relationship with Him. Whatever excuse we may use, it is simply being disobedient to the one true king. Not only does the Holy Spirit prompt us, but He also wants to give us power and wisdom.

Isaiah 11:2 says, “The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD—”

The Holy Spirit rests on us, the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. He gives us wisdom for our life, for parenting, for relationships with friends and family. He gives us understanding for difficult seasons and situations. He is the Spirit of counsel and might. He offers counsel in difficult times through you and other believers. He is the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.

To know God is to love God. God wants to know us, and He wants us to know Him through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can help us in all of these parts of our lives, we just have to lean into Him, listen to Him, and obey.

PRAYER: Holy Spirit, I ask that You give me wisdom and understanding in difficult times. I ask that You bring people into my life that can counsel me according to Your way and Your word. I ask that You help open up my heart so that I can learn more about You and understand You more.

Yep! I'm guilty of thinking "they'll think I'm weird." This is a great reminder to do it anyway.
