The Best Investment

The friendship we are privileged to have with Holy Spirit is so sweet. We have the honor of having a 24/7 best friend who is always for us and can help us walk through life. Just like any friendship, a relationship with Holy Spirit takes nurturing. We must invest in our relationship in order to strengthen it. Jesus sent us The Helper in order to empower us to live this life in a way that gives glory to God.

So how do we invest in this friendship?

How do we invest in any friendship? We spend time together. We affirm one another. We give hugs and high-fives. We give meaningful and intentional gifts. We serve one another. If that’s how I would invest in my relationships with my friends, why wouldn’t I apply those same things with Holy Spirit? Let’s dive into each love language and how to apply it.

Quality time. Spending quality time together is the best way to get to know someone. How can we be intentional today by spending quality (not necessarily quantity) time together with Holy Spirit? That might look like spending time riding in your car praying and telling Holy Spirit about your day. Maybe you need to go for a walk at the end of your day and invite Holy Spirit into your thoughts and feelings.

Words of Affirmation. God loves our worship; this truth is seen all throughout the Bible. He loves when His people come together to worship Him. People have done an amazing job from the beginning of time articulating affirmations to God through song, but there is a song in you that only you can offer Him. Take some time this week to praise Holy Spirit with your own song of affirmation and worship! It might not sound good or have creative lyrics, but it is so sweet to Holy Spirit.

Physical Touch. Obviously, you can’t give Holy Spirit a physical hug, not until Jesus returns one day! Instead, how we can apply this love language is by the physical postures we use in worship. We can lift our hands, get on our knees, dance and jump in order to connect with Holy Spirit. Step out of your comfort zone this week and use a different posture in worship.

Gifts. Everything we have comes from Him, so what is it that we can offer Him? Anything that we offer Holy Spirit as a sacrifice is a gift! When we give up our time, talent, or money, we are giving Him a sweet gift! Ask Holy Spirit what you can offer Him today.

Acts of Service. How can we serve Holy Spirit today? Often that starts by listening to His direction and being obedient to what He has asked of you. Sometimes acts of service could look like volunteering and serving at your local church or a local ministry. Obedience to the voice of God is an incredible way to grow in your intimacy with Him. He loves when we say “yes” to Him!

JOURNAL your thoughts on how you can invest in your relationship with Holy Spirit this week by using the 5 love languages.

Thank you so much for this devotional, it was an easy read with practical context. So often we read what we should do but not how to do it!
