Betrayed Yet Stable

“So here’s what I’ve learned through it all: Leave all your cares and anxieties at the feet of the Lord, and measureless grace will strengthen you. He will watch over his devoted lovers, never letting them slip or be overthrown. He will send all my enemies to the pit of destruction. Murderers, liars, and betrayers will face an untimely death. My life’s hope and trust is in you, and you’ll never fail to rescue me!” – Psalms‬ ‭55:22-23‬ ‭TPT‬‬

David has some strong words for whatever he is facing. While scholars have debated the exact circumstances behind this Psalm, the overwhelming opinion is that this was written in the height of his betrayal by his son Absalom.

This Psalm speaks so many things, but I greatly appreciate that an old and wise David says what he learned through it all.

“Leave all your cares and anxieties at the feet of the Lord, and measureless grace will strengthen you.”

I really struggle with that at times, and my bet is that you do as well. Let’s break down this verse and what God is challenging us to do in it.

Leave it all.
At the risk of getting a song stuck in your head all day long, we simply have to “let it go.” “Leave it“ means to drop it, stop holding it, stop carrying it. If I carry it long enough, it will become part of my identity. That's what the enemy wants. He wants you to be known and identified by what has happened to you. God wants you to identify by what He has done for you and what He calls you. No doubt, your painful past is part of your story, but it does not define you. Only God can do that. The longer you hold it instead of leave it, the longer it has the ability to change the way you see yourself.

At His feet.
Last year God really spoke to my heart about the passage of Scripture, when Martha was busy preparing and Mary was sitting at Jesus' feet. In my line of work, it’s easy for me to get busy doing instead of sitting at His feet. Even this week, I’ve struggled to get to His feet. I would love to say that it was some major attack or that I’ve been taking some mountain, but the hard truth is I’ve been distracted.

It’s easier to work for Him than sit with Him.

When I’m distracted, I carry things I was never meant to carry. Consider the day and all the things that impact our heart–the offenses, the frustrations, the fears and the anxiety–and how they make a play for our affections. We must realize that we have to unpack those things at His feet. At His feet, we are close to Him. At his feet, He is large in our view and everything else is correct in size.

He has measureless grace; I do not.
What a statement. He never runs out of what I need. I have limited capacity. I have limited grace. I have limited ability. He does not. I think that this is by His design. It means that to get what I need, I have to go to Him.

People will betray you. They will talk negatively about you, instead of talking to you. They will hurt you. In these moments, we can feel betrayed, yet still remain steady, if we learn to leave it at His feet and receive His measureless grace, rather than relying on my very limited supply.

We were not meant to carry but to cast our burdens. Cast them today on Him. He can handle it. And not only can He handle it, but He can also give you something wonderful in return for the weight you have been carrying.
