Trust Without Borders

“Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders.
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me.
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander,
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior.”

– Hillsong UNITED, “Oceans (Where Feet May Fall)”

Released in 2013, this popular worship song took the airwaves and church sanctuaries by storm. It seemed to be playing everywhere; and I believe, it’s because it spoke to people. The lyrics touched a part of our hearts and lives and begged us to surrender our trust to our Savior.

At the time, I happened to be going through some personal trials and had only recently discovered a true relationship with the Holy Spirit, despite being saved as a young girl and growing up in church. My previous experience had been based on rules rather than relationship, so trusting the Holy Spirit was not something I knew how to do easily. Yet this song spoke to that inner voice that was prodding me to let myself lean on Him.

So what makes this song so special that, even after over a decade later, I'm still thinking about it? It's a cry for radical surrender. It’s asking the Holy Spirit to take us to a place in our faith where there are no limitations. That can be a scary thing. Trust without borders means stepping beyond the familiar and safe. It’s Abraham leaving his home for a land he didn’t know (Genesis 12) or Peter stepping out of the boat (Matthew 14:28-29). It’s not only trusting God in the “known” but also in the uncertainty.

Full surrender means obedience without waiting for a full understanding. Faith is not the absence of fear, but the choice to step out anyway. Like Peter, we can do the scary, the unknown, and the seemingly impossible when our focus is on Jesus rather than the storm. On our own, we can only go so far, but the Spirit draws us deeper into intimacy and trust.

The more we abide in the Holy Spirit, the more our trust grows. His presence does not promise us smooth waters, but it does promise peace and provision through the storm. Praying or singing these lyrics isn’t about asking for an easy life. It’s about asking for a life filled with faith that is reliant on the Holy Spirit. When we step out in faith, we may feel like we are sinking, but we’ll always find His hand reaching to lift us up.

Reflection: Where is God calling you to trust Him beyond your comfort zone? Are there areas in your life where you’ve set borders around your faith? How can you practice being in the presence of your Savior daily?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, lead me where my trust has no borders. Call me out upon the waters, and take me deeper than I could ever go on my own. When fear rises, draw me closer to You. Strengthen my faith in Your presence, and make me brave in obedience. I trust You, Lord, wherever You lead. Amen
