Serious and Watchful in Prayer

Key Thought | Prayer isn’t about performance. It’s about presence. A serious and watchful prayer life anchors our souls and awakens our spiritual eyes.

Key Scripture | “But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.” —1 Peter 4:7 NKJV

Peter instructs us to be serious and watchful in prayer because the end of all things is at hand. If I’m honest, I’ve always wrestled with my prayer life. Part of that struggle came from a religious misunderstanding of what prayer was supposed to be, and the other part came from my own personality.

Growing up, I was surrounded by what I would call “professional pray-ers.” When people prayed, they shifted into a different tone—louder, more intense, almost as if volume was the key to getting God’s attention. I don’t mind excitement, and if you’ve ever heard me pray or speak, you know I get fired up. But in this season, the Lord has been reminding me that my excitement doesn’t move God – my heart does.

The personality side of the struggle is simple: I have a hard time sitting still and focusing in silence. For a long time, I used that as an excuse instead of developing practices that anchored me in prayer. It’s still a journey, but I’m discovering that prayer isn’t a checklist; it’s intimacy, relationship, and connection with God.

Peter gives us two directives about prayer:

1. Be serious about prayer.

Of all our spiritual practices, prayer is the one meant to steady and anchor our souls. The practice of prayer existed even before the canon of Scripture was completed. Recently, I asked someone with a deep, intimate relationship with God what their quiet time looked like. Their response helped me more than they knew: “I always start in prayer, not in Scripture.”

They invite God into the moment instead of immediately jumping into a reading plan. They ask the Holy Spirit to lead them rather than expecting Him to follow their agenda.

As we approach a new year, perhaps God is inviting you to do the same – to take prayer seriously, let go of religious assumptions, and allow Him to breathe fresh life into your prayer rhythms.

2. Be watchful in prayer.

A healthy prayer life opens our spiritual eyes. We begin to perceive what God is doing and also discern what the enemy is attempting. This matters deeply in our families, our work, and our church. Prayer awakens us to the ongoing activity of God.

When I chose to focus more intentionally on prayer, I became more aware of God throughout my day. My spiritual eyes and ears opened. Prayer syncs our hearts to the frequency of heaven.

Be serious and be watchful. What an incredible invitation. God is looking for those who meet Him in the secret place, not just on stages—those who know where to find Him, not just those who wait to be found by Him.

Prayer | Father, deepen my desire for true intimacy with You. Teach me to approach prayer with seriousness, focus, and expectancy. Open my spiritual eyes and ears to Your activity all around me. Help me release religious mindsets and enter into real relationship with You. Make me both serious and watchful in my prayers. Amen.
