Unforced Rhythms of Grace | Living Freely and Lightly

Key Thought | Life becomes heavy when we carry it alone. Freedom and lightness return when we stay close to Jesus–our Savior, our teacher, and our friend.
Key Scripture | “Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” —Matthew 11:28–30 MSG
Here we are at the last part of our series. Look at us, spending a whole week on just a few verses. Hopefully these reflections have been as meaningful for you as they’ve been for me. There is so much richness in Scripture when we slow down long enough to absorb what Jesus is really saying.
“Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
This was the line that first captured my heart months ago. A few close people in my life looked at me and said gently, “You look heavy.” They could see pressure on me that I wasn’t seeing, or wasn’t willing to admit.
It had been a long time since I had lived “freely and lightly,” and something in me knew that if I didn’t find that again, I wouldn’t be able to keep doing ministry the way I was.
That’s when the revelation came: I had been doing ministry without Him.
I know that sounds crazy, but it’s true, and honestly, it’s terrifying. So much of what people were impressed by was me. It was the gift God placed in me when He knit me together in my mother’s womb, but somewhere along the way, it became disconnected from His breath.
Yes, He used it.
No, I didn’t intend for it to be that way.
But reality is our friend, and facing it changed everything.
When something is built on us and our ability, the weight also falls on us to keep it standing. Eventually, God allowed things to grow just big enough that I couldn’t prop them up anymore. And in His grace, instead of letting it crumble, He lovingly showed me a better way.
“Keep company with me.”
His invitation has always been Himself.
For months I’ve been saying: the answer is to fall in love with Jesus. It really is that simple and that profound. He is that good.
I don’t have anything to prove to Him, because He knows me better than I know myself. He is the best friend because He loves the real me–not the polished me, not the performing me, not the version of me I wish I were.
He loves the me He designed.
And He loves the me I am today.
What a verse. What a Savior. What a Friend.
Prayer | Jesus, thank You for inviting me to keep company with You. Teach me to live freely and lightly, letting go of the weight I’ve tried to carry on my own. Breathe on every part of my life and ministry, and draw me back into simple, steady friendship with You. Let my pace match Yours, and let my heart rest in Your love. Amen.
