Didn't Our Hearts Burn? | Part Two

Key Thought | Sometimes moving forward in faith requires looking backward to see the fullness of God’s story.

Key Scripture | “Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” —Luke 24:27 (NLT)

This week, as we prepare for Conference, I want to spend time looking at where the vision for Conference came from.

Luke 24:13–24 tells the story of two Jewish disciples who encounter Jesus on the road. He walks with them, talks with them, and eventually reveals who He truly is.

Today, I want to focus on this single verse from that story.

“Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” —Luke 24:27 (NLT)

They didn’t know who Jesus really was. They saw Him as a prophet and a great teacher, but not as the Messiah they had hoped for—the One prophesied throughout the Old Testament, the One they believed would rescue them from Roman rule and establish a Jewish kingdom with a Jewish king.

What Jesus does for these two men is remarkable. He takes them all the way back to Moses and walks them through the entire Old Testament, teaching them for hours. What a walk. What a seminar to be invited into. Jesus, the Word Himself, showing them how He had been there all along and revealing the meaning of the written Word. If I’m honest, I’m a little envious of that moment.

For many of us, we need a reverse Emmaus experience. We may know Jesus, but we don’t fully know where He comes from—the faith that shaped Him as a young boy, and how He is the fulfillment of the Old Testament. It would do us good to remember that the roots of our faith are Jewish and that there is incredible richness in those roots.

I’m grateful that I don’t have to be Jewish to be saved. I like bacon too much. That’s a joke… mostly. But truly, there is so much depth in the story God has been authoring for those who believe in Jesus, a story that stretches all the way back to Abraham.

The more we walk with Jesus, the more we want to know Him. And the more we know Him, the more we want to see the whole story, how God has been faithfully writing something beautiful and rich all along.

Two men received a history lesson, and in the end, it revealed who Jesus really was. For many of us who say we know Him, it may be time to take a journey back to the roots of this Jesus and rediscover just how amazing He is.

As you prepare your heart this week, consider taking time to revisit the foundations of your faith. Ask God to deepen your understanding, not just of who Jesus is, but of the story He fulfills. Sometimes clarity comes when we allow Him to walk us back before He leads us forward.

Prayer | Jesus, thank You for being present in the story long before I ever knew Your name. Teach me to love the fullness of Your Word and to see You woven throughout it all. Help my heart burn again as I grow in understanding of who You truly are. Amen.

Reflection
  • How well do you know the story that leads up to Jesus?
  • What might God want to show you if you slowed down and revisited the roots of your faith?
