When I'm Not Ok, Part 1 | Honest Hearts Before God

Key Thought | God gave us emotions—not to hide from Him, but to lead us to Him.

Key Scripture | “Hear my prayer, O Lord… For I am your guest—a traveler passing through.” —Psalm 39:12

There are seasons when words feel dangerous. When we’re afraid that if we say what we’re really thinking, we might say the wrong thing or expose something we don’t fully understand ourselves. Psalm 39 captures that tension so honestly. David tries to stay quiet. He restrains himself. He doesn’t want to sin with his words. But silence doesn’t calm the storm; it intensifies it.

The longer he holds it in, the heavier it becomes. His thoughts churn. His heart grows hot. And eventually, what spills out isn’t polished. It’s raw. He doesn’t ask for easy answers. He asks for perspective. “Remind me how brief this life is.” Not because he’s giving up, but because he’s trying to locate his pain inside God’s bigger story.

God is not uncomfortable with that kind of prayer. He’s not intimidated by our emotions or disappointed by our honesty. In fact, He designed us with emotions so we could know Him more deeply—not just intellectually, but relationally. Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come, not once they’ve figured it out, but exactly as they are.

Sometimes healing doesn’t begin with solutions; it begins with permission. Permission to stop pretending. Permission to speak. Permission to bring the real ache into God’s presence and trust that He will meet us there.

This week, stop filtering your prayers. Bring God the real words, the real feelings, and the real questions. Healing begins with honesty.

Prayer | Lord, help me stop pretending I’m fine when I’m not. Teach me to bring my whole heart to You, unfiltered and unafraid. Amen.

Really need this today. Struggling with not knowing how to articulate my thoughts and feelings around my current life situation and why I feel so completely unsettled where I am. I trust God has a plan for my life, but I’m also very, very tired.

Such a great reminder. Struggling with being able to put words to my emotions as it relates to a really, really long desert season.
