When You Don’t Know What to Do | Stand Firm, Part 7

Key Truth | Faith does not require us to have the answer. Sometimes faith simply fixes its eyes on the One who does.

Key Scripture | “We do not know what to do, but we are looking to You for help.” — 2 Chronicles 20:12

Some decisions have an obvious next step. Others leave us staring at several paths and wishing God would simply write the answer across the sky.

We pray. We seek wisdom. We weigh our options. We ask people we trust. And sometimes, after doing all of that, we still arrive at the same uncomfortable conclusion: I honestly do not know what to do.

If you have ever felt that way, Scripture gives us a beautiful picture of what faith can look like in uncertainty. Jehoshaphat received news no leader wants to hear. A massive army was coming against Judah. He could not outnumber them. He could not outmaneuver them. From a human perspective, he did not have a good answer. So he gathered the people and prayed.

Then he said one of the most honest sentences in Scripture: “We do not know what to do, but we are looking to You.”

There is something freeing about that prayer. Because sometimes we genuinely do not know.

We do not know which decision is right. We do not know how the story will end. We do not know how God is going to provide. We do not know what the doctor will say, what the child will choose, whether the relationship will heal, or when the answer will come.

We simply do not know.

Our instinct is often to treat uncertainty like a spiritual failure. Surely stronger faith would have clarity. But Jehoshaphat shows us another kind of faith.

Faith can say, “I do not know.” It just refuses to stop there.

“But my eyes are on You.”

God's answer to Judah was not a detailed explanation of everything that would happen. He simply told them, “The battle is not yours, but God’s. Take your positions. Stand still and watch.”

They still had to walk toward the battlefield. That is important.

Trust does not always mean doing nothing. Sometimes God asks us to take the next faithful step without knowing what comes after it.

We take our position, and we trust Him with the outcome.

You do not need the entire plan today.

Ask God for the next faithful step, keep your eyes on Him, and leave room for Him to handle what you cannot.

Reflection
  • Where am I feeling pressure to have an answer that I simply do not have yet?
  • What is the next faithful step God may be asking me to take?

Prayer | God, I confess that there are things I simply do not know what to do about. Instead of allowing uncertainty to consume me, I choose to turn my eyes toward You. Give me wisdom for the step that belongs to me and faith to trust You with everything that does not. The battle belongs to You. Amen.
