Relationships That Refresh | The Way of Grace, Part 4

Key Truth | Grace builds relationships on trust and generosity rather than fear, control, or keeping score.

Key Scripture | “The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” — Proverbs 11:25 NLT

Some relationships leave us feeling lighter.

After spending time with certain people, we feel encouraged, known, and strengthened. We do not have to perform. We are not wondering what we owe them or whether one wrong move will change the relationship.

Other relationships can feel exhausting.

Sometimes that happens because the relationship has quietly become transactional. Instead of simply loving one another, we begin keeping track.

I called last time.
I did this for you.
You should do this for me.
I will support you as long as you support me.

Relationships were never meant to function like contracts.

When self-interest becomes the driving force, there will eventually be winners and losers. But grace asks a different question. Instead of, What am I getting from this relationship? grace asks, How can I love this person well?

Fear can create similar problems.

When we are afraid of losing someone, disappointing someone, or being hurt again, we often reach for control. We try to manage outcomes, manage conversations, manage people, or manage how they see us.

For some of us, fear makes us grip tighter. For others, it makes us pull away completely. Neither produces the kind of relationships God designed us to experience.

Grace allows trust to grow. It gives people room to make decisions, mature, communicate, fail, learn, and grow without constantly being controlled. Healthy trust does not mean ignoring wisdom or boundaries. It means recognizing that we were never meant to carry responsibility for another person’s every choice.

Proverbs gives us a beautiful picture of another kind of relationship: one that refreshes.

Imagine being that kind of person.

Someone whose presence brings encouragement rather than anxiety. Someone who listens without immediately fixing. Someone who celebrates another person’s win without wondering what it means for them. Someone who gives without constantly measuring what they are receiving back.

There is something deeply Christlike about becoming a person who refreshes others.

And Scripture says something beautiful happens along the way: those who refresh others are themselves refreshed.

Ask yourself one simple question today: What does it feel like to be in relationship with me?

You do not have to answer with shame. Simply invite the Holy Spirit to reveal one way you could bring more encouragement, freedom, generosity, or peace into the relationships around you.

Reflection
  • Do any of my relationships operate more from fear, control, or transaction than trust?
  • What is one practical way I can refresh someone this week without expecting anything in return?

Prayer | Lord, make me someone who refreshes the people around me. Show me where fear, control, or selfishness has affected the way I relate to others. Teach me to trust You enough to loosen my grip and to love people without constantly measuring what I receive in return. Let my relationships be marked by generosity, peace, encouragement, and grace. Amen.
