Our Most Important Resource
A couple of years ago, our staff read the book Strengths Based Leadership by Tom Rath and Barry Conchie and also took a test to find out what our top five strengths were. It came as no surprise to me that Input and Learner were in my top five. I love to learn.
As long as I can remember, I would research different topics of interest, searching for as much information as I could find. Pre-internet, I would go to the library and scour the shelves, and now Google and I are best friends. It’s important to me that I understand how and why something is the way that it is. Whether it’s nutrition, parenting, or the different stages of building a house, it’s all very fascinating to me.
However, at some point, I realized that this wasn’t always a good thing, at least the way that I was doing it. At times, I was turning to the wrong source of information. In my spiritual life, I often read “self-help” or “inspirational” books by Christians authors, and there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with that. The problem was that I would turn to them before I would turn to God’s Word.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
Everything we need can be found in Scripture. It’s the inspired Word of God. He gave us all of the answers, inspiration, and truth that can help us navigate the trials of life. We have only to read and receive it.
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. - Psalm 119:105 NIV
That doesn’t mean books from Christian authors and pastors are wrong, as long as they speak truth and point back to the Word. We simply must establish a habit of making Scripture our first stop.
JOURNAL: Is God’s Word your first resource or do you turn to your favorite pastor or author for truth?
ACTIVATION: Purpose in your heart to make reading God’s Word a priority.
PRAYER: Ask God to help you establish the habit of turning to His Word first and then other resources once you’ve done that.

- Read God’s Word daily.
- Memorize scripture to use to fight the enemies' lies.
- Determine to turn to the Bible for answers and direction before turning to books, podcasts, or other resources.
PRAYER: Ask God to help you establish the habit of turning to His Word first and then other resources once you’ve done that.
