Are You Hungry?

Growing up, I remember that anytime I was visiting either of my grandmother's homes, the first question they would ask would be, “Are you hungry or thirsty?” The memory of my grandparents serving, loving, and fulfilling a need was what I remember the most in those visits. Homemade chocolate pie, country ham biscuits, and freshly brewed coffee were staples in their homes. And yes, I did start drinking my coffee out of teacups at age 5. What a joy!

See, these were things that I hungered for and that satisfied my soul in priceless ways. I knew I couldn’t find these things, this love and hospitality, anywhere else. I knew what would be available and that there was always an open invitation to visit.

We have discovered in our current series, The Glory, that Jesus, “The Bread of Life,” is always available to us. He longs to be with us and satisfy us in ways that nothing or no one else can. Then why is it on certain days that He is the last person I run to?

Many times, we can bypass the very One who can bring us peace when chaos so often surrounds us.

God requested that Moses build a mobile tabernacle so He could dwell among the people. In the tabernacle, the Table of the Showbread was always made available. The showbread is called the “Bread of the Presence.”  It mimics the heavenly dwelling place. The 12 loaves of bread were baked fresh on a weekly basis as an offering to the priests and to God. Each loaf represented the 12 tribes of Israel.

It reminds me so much of when I would visit my grandmother’s, knowing what would freely be available to me. It was a place of rest, renewal, and provision that satisfied my desires and hunger. I left better than I came. Being there brought a joy and peace that I couldn't have explained then, but now I fully understand.

Are you hungry? Has life left you tired, discouraged, and defeated from what you or a loved one are currently facing?

The Bread of Life sustains us through the trials of life. Jesus says in Matthew 5:6 CSB, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

Jesus came to save us but also to satisfy our deepest longings and needs so that when the trials of life come, we would remember that He is the bread of life and it's in His presence where we find hope in our time of need. Even if our situation is the same, He still is available to comfort and lead us through the trials and seasons of our lives.

Give yourself grace. His mercies are new every morning. He hears our prayers and knows our hearts.

Paul reminds us:

And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose. - Romans 8:27-28 NIV

Are you hungry and in need? Go to Him. Get quiet and let Jesus fill you.

You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. - Psalm 16:11 NKJV
