Hope of the World

Christmas time. What an extravagant season full of celebration, loud gatherings, expensive gifts, lights, decorations, and endless traditions. This all came from a very simple and unglamorous day over 2,000 years ago when Jesus was born in a manger within a dark stable, surrounded by smelly animals. There was no party or large celebration for this birth that brought forth hope into a dark world. Even though the day of His birthday felt simple in comparison to the gift He is, there were years and years of prophecies that were given to prepare the world for His coming. One of the most often quoted prophecies of Jesus’ coming is found in Isaiah 9. Isaiah is encouraging the people of Israel that after years of affliction and pain that there would be hope again.

READ: Isaiah 9:2-7

What a sweet gift, that we get to cling to an eternal hope in a Savior who is steadfast no matter if we are on a mountain top or walking in the valley in the shadow of death. Isaiah 9 reveals to us so much about who Jesus is.

He is the light in darkness.
He carries the government.
He is Wonderful Counselor.
He is Mighty God.
He is Everlasting Father.
He is Prince of Peace.
He is a fair and just ruler.
He is King forever.
He is our forever hope.

In a world where there is constant change in our culture, political landscape, relationships, and beliefs, it is so comforting to know the God we serve never changes. He is everything we need. He will keep us no matter what we face. This holiday season, or life in general, might be really difficult; it might feel like there is no end in sight to your pain. Take heart that we serve a God that has overcome the world, and He is with you every step of the way. We can have hope because He lives!

Pray Isaiah 9:2-7 over yourself today, make it personal for you.

“Father, thank You for the promises in Your Word. Teach me to believe that even when I walk in darkness, I will see a great light. Remind me that when I live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine. Father, You will grow and strengthen me, and I will praise You. You have broken the yoke of bondage over me and lift the heaviness that I feel. You will protect me from the attacks of the enemy. I know I can walk in freedom because You sent Jesus to earth. Thank You for counseling me through pain and grief. Thank You for being mighty and worthy of all my praise. Thank You for being the same yesterday, today and forever. Thank You for Your perfect peace that passes all understanding. Thank You for the promise that Your Kingdom is eternal and You will forever be seated on the throne. Even when life feels out of control or painful, I will remember that You reign forever. In moments of doubt, remind me of Your goodness. Amen.”
