Joy In All Seasons

Joy is a word that gets thrown around a lot during the holiday season; but for some reason, it seems like something we struggle with. Whether it is the hardships of life or mere business, joy is increasingly escaping from people's daily lives.

I don’t know about you, but some days it feels impossible to rejoice. Life’s challenges can feel overwhelming, and joy seems out of reach. When I read Paul’s words in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” it feels like a reminder from deep within my soul. Rejoicing isn’t about pretending everything is fine—it’s about choosing to remember the goodness of God, even when life is hard.

When I take a moment to reflect on God’s faithfulness, I realize that my joy is not dependent on whether everything is going the way I want. My joy is rooted in who God is and the unshakable truth that He is with me. The world around me might be in chaos, but my joy comes from knowing I’m loved by an unchanging, all-powerful God.

I think of the times in my own life when I’ve faced struggles, whether it was a tough season in my relationships, work pressure, or health issues. There have been moments when joy felt distant. But when I stop and shift my focus from the problem to the presence of Christ, I realize that He is near, just as Paul assures us in verse 5: “The Lord is near.” That truth changes everything. God is near, and He sees me. His love is steadfast, and that is enough to spark joy, no matter what I’m facing.

I often find myself anxious, overwhelmed by the “what-ifs” and “whys” of life. But Paul gives us a beautiful solution in verse 6: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” When I am anxious, I don’t have to carry that burden alone. I can go to God in prayer—pour out my heart to Him and trust that He hears me.

And here’s the key: Paul doesn’t just tell me to pray. He encourages me to pray with thanksgiving. It’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong; but as I take time to reflect on all the ways God has been faithful to me, my heart starts to shift. I remember His goodness, His provision, and His love for me. Even when life is hard, there is always something to be thankful for.

The most beautiful part of this passage comes in verse 7, where Paul promises that God’s peace will guard our hearts and minds. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This peace isn’t just the absence of worry; it’s a deep, soul-satisfying peace that guards us when we feel vulnerable.

I’ve experienced this peace in some of my most anxious moments. When I’ve prayed, trusting God with my worries, I’ve felt a peace that doesn’t make sense in the natural. It’s a peace that protects me from fear and worry, a peace that says, “It’s going to be okay because God is with you.” And that peace is a source of joy, not because my situation changes, but because I know my Savior is near, holding me in His peace.

Maybe today, you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious. I encourage you to take a moment to pause and remember God’s faithfulness. Rejoice in His goodness. Pray with thanksgiving. And as you do, let the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, fill you and guard your heart.

PRAYER:
Lord, thank You for the gift of joy that comes from knowing You. Even on days when everything feels difficult, help me to choose to rejoice in Your presence. When anxiety tries to overwhelm me, remind me to turn to You in prayer with a heart of thanksgiving. I trust that Your peace will guard my heart and mind, no matter what I face. Thank You for being near, and for filling me with joy in Your presence. In Jesus' name, Amen.
